About GS — Surgical Equipment

Eleven surgical platforms, each with its own job.

GS Eye Center operates its surgical equipment in-house: the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 for SMILE Pro, two VISUMAX 500 lasers, the Johnson & Johnson ELITA for SILK, and the SCHWIND AMARIS RED 1050s for LASIK and LASEK. Cataract, retina and dry-eye care each run on dedicated platforms, listed below with maker and unit count.

Which lasers perform SMILE, SILK and LASIK here?

Three different lenticule-capable platforms plus an excimer laser. The exam results decide which one fits your eyes — not the other way around.

VISUMAX 800 — SMILE Pro

SMILE Pro is performed exclusively on the VISUMAX 800, the successor generation to the VISUMAX 500. Laser time is 9 seconds or less per eye, and the clinic performed its first SMILE Pro case on this platform on August 14, 2023. By April 2026 the clinic had reached 15,000 SMILE Pro eyes per ZEISS's count.

Publicly listed patients on the clinic's Korean site include K-pop artists (IVE Leeseo, ASTRO Jinjin & MJ), baseball players Go Woo-suk and Jang Hyun-seok, and pro gamers Peanut, Life and Zeka.

VISUMAX 500 — SMILE LASIK & LASIK

Two VISUMAX 500 lasers have run side by side since 2019. The laser passes through the corneal surface and corrects the inner stromal layer alone, and LASIK flaps are also cut all-laser on this platform. A 135-degree bevel cut is used so the cornea locks firmly against external impact after surgery.

Publicly listed patients include ASTRO Cha Eun-woo, IVE Liz, MONSTA X and Stray Kids members, and MLB players Jung-hoo Lee (San Francisco Giants) and Ha-seong Kim.

ELITA — SILK

Released in 2020 and installed at GS in 2025, ELITA cuts a bi-convex lenticule whose upper and lower curvatures are the same size — a design Johnson & Johnson introduced with this platform. The clinic notes it suits patients in their 20s and 30s as well as those in their 40s and 50s whose earlier laser correction has regressed or who have progressing presbyopia. GS was designated a SILK TRAINING Center in 2026.

AMARIS RED 1050s — LASIK & LASEK

The AMARIS RED fires at 1,050 Hz with 7-dimension eye tracking, which shortens ablation time. Wavefront technology maps the individual shape of the eye to reduce higher-order aberrations, and Smart Pulse technology leaves a smoother ablation surface — the basis of the clinic's 2Day LASEK protocol.

Publicly listed 2Day LASEK patients include announcer Oh Sang-jin and actors Wi Ha-jun, Moon Chae-won and Jin Tae-hyun.

Avedro KXL cross-linking system positioned over a patient during treatment
Avedro · 4 units

Avedro KXL — Corneal cross-linking

Riboflavin (vitamin B) drops combined with the KXL system increase the collagen bonding strength of the cornea. The clinic uses it to strengthen the cornea and reduce the risk of myopic regression, and keeps four units so cross-linking can be added alongside laser vision correction.

Cataract

What does cataract surgery run on?

Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 femtosecond laser cart for cornea and cataract surgery
Ziemer · Switzerland · 1 unit

FEMTO LDV Z8 — Laser cataract surgery

Installed in 2020, the Z8 performs the corneal incision and lens fragmentation steps of cataract surgery with a laser rather than ultrasound. The platform can also perform CLEAR lenticule extraction, though GS does not offer that procedure — a distinction the clinic states openly.

Publicly listed multifocal cataract patients include actor Cheon Ho-jin and singer-professor Jang Hye-jin.

Smart Cataract System
Alcon CENTURION phacoemulsification system on a wheeled stand with touchscreen
Alcon · USA · 2 units

CENTURION — Phacoemulsification

Alcon's current-generation phacoemulsification system for cataract surgery, run as a pair at GS. Its automatic intraocular-pressure sensing keeps pressure stable during surgery, which the clinic credits with a large reduction in discomfort.

Retina

And retina surgery?

Alcon Constellation vitrectomy system with articulated instrument tray
Alcon · USA · 1 unit

Constellation — Micro-incision vitrectomy

The Constellation is the micro-incision retina surgery platform used at major university hospitals, cutting at 7,500 cycles per minute. Operating through small ports supports faster visual recovery with less foreign-body sensation and less induced astigmatism. It also lets the team treat complications immediately if they arise during a difficult cataract case.

What about non-surgical equipment?

Lumenis M22 IPL platform with dual handpieces on a wheeled stand
Lumenis · Israel · 1 unit

M22 IPL — Dry eye

The M22 uses light-based heat and stimulation to calm eyelid inflammation and melt hardened oil in the meibomian glands so natural oil flow resumes. It is FDA-approved and, per the clinic, validated at accredited medical institutions in some 20 countries, including the Mayo Clinic.

Dry Eye Clinic
Acutron radio-frequency device with tablet console and slim handpiece
Ilooda · Korea · 1 unit

Acutron — Conjunctivochalasis

A 2 MHz radio-frequency device used for conjunctivochalasis and conjunctival edema, carrying FDA, PMDA, CE and Korean MFDS approvals. Its patented OcuRF needle is designed to keep side effects to a minimum.

Surgery itself is viewed through the ZEISS Lumera 700 surgical microscope, used for cataract, retina and corneal transplant procedures.

FAQ

Equipment questions patients actually ask

SMILE Pro (VISUMAX 800), SMILE LASIK (VISUMAX 500) and SILK (ELITA) each behave differently — laser time, lenticule shape and the patient profiles they suit. A clinic with one platform can offer you one answer; GS matches the platform to your exam results, including cases like myopic regression after earlier surgery where ELITA may fit better.

Largely the same makers: ZEISS, Johnson & Johnson, Alcon and Lumenis platforms are all in use at GS, and the VISUMAX line and M22 carry FDA approvals. The VISUMAX 800 for SMILE Pro is a newer-generation ZEISS platform that the clinic has operated since 2023.

Your surgeon, based on roughly two hours of diagnostic testing at the 16F exam center — corneal thickness, topography, pupil size, dry-eye status and more. If no procedure is suitable, the clinic tells you so. See the diagnostic equipment page for what gets measured.

The names above are published by the clinic itself on its official Korean website, listed under the specific platform each person was treated on. We repeat them here exactly as the clinic lists them, without additions.
